Avanamkulam Subrahmanya temple

This temple was earlier thought to be a Subrahmanya temple. We encountered various roadblocks and difficulties in the restoration process.

Avanamkulam Subrahmanya temple is an ancient Hindu temple at Edachalam village in Kuttipuram in the Malappuram district of Kerala which was destroyed during the invasion of Tipu Sultan. The temple is several centuries old and has been lying in ruins ever since.

The people of the locality started the restoration of this temple in 1988 but couldn’t complete it due to lack of resources. Even today they worship the feet of the Deity BalaSubrahmanya which is the only remains after the idols was cutoff to pieces by invading forces.

UgraNarasimha Charitable Trust has undertaken to complete the restoration and revive worship at this ancient temple.

The entire temple complex consist also of Srikrishna , Ayyappa and Bhadrakali temples which were destroyed during the invasion of Tipu Sultan. The Subrahmanya temple is being restored along with the three other temples.

The entire temple complex was in ruins for at least two centuries. The temple compound were later used for slaughter purposes by non believers.

Many attempts were made by devotees for past many decades for restoration of the temple. The efforts were getting stalled due to unfortunate accidents and events.

New Beginnings

The temple ruins were found and documented by UgraNarasimha Charitable Trust as part of the efforts to restore 300 ancient temples in ruins.

Astrological calculations via Devaprashnam by Brahmasree Sudheer Namboodhiri, former Chief Priest of Sabarimala temple showed presence of certain influences made to stall the revival of this temple. During the calculation and reinspection it was found that the broken Vigraha for whom the Garbagriha was being constructed is that of Srikrishna. Hence it was decided to use the present Garbagriha for Srikrishna.

Corrective measures taken to sanctify land and remove certain influences

  1. MahaGanapathy Homam
  2. Ghananadhi Shudhi kriya
  3. Adbhuta Shanti kriya
  4. Aparadha Kshamapanam

and certain other kriyas were done to sanctify the land and help in the restoration of the temple.

Shilanyas

The Shilanyas of the temple was performed by Swamini AthulyamruthaPrana, Mathathipathi of Matha Amritanandamayi Ashram Malappuram on 31.10.2022

UPDATES:

2022 November

The foundation of the Garbagriha was completed in November 2022

2022 December

The base of the Garbagriha was completed in December 2022.

Next is the affixing of stone door frames on Garbagriha. This will happen after rituals and pujas on an auspicious date.

This temple is part of the #ReclaimTemples project in Kerala to rebuild 300 ancient Hindu Heritage temples that are lying in ruins for decades and centuries. We believe the project will strengthen the society and along with their social, economic and cultural prosperity.
