Thalakkadkavu Bhagavati Temple in Malappuram was discovered in ruins, its deities missing or partially broken — destruction attributed to the 1921 riots and, before that, the invasions of Hyder Ali. For decades, local devotees could only light a lamp at the site and pray for its restoration, unable to rebuild it themselves.
The site was taken up as part of the #ReclaimTemples project, and local devotees were organised into a committee to support the work. A restoration plan was prepared by vastushastra experts, with the Garbhagriha's reconstruction estimated at ten lakh rupees.
A Devaprashnam to identify the temple's ritual requirements was held on 28 December 2020, followed by ground measurements on 5 April 2021, the Deity's move to a temporary sanctum on 15 July 2021, and Shilanyas on 25 August 2021. Stone door frames were installed by December 2021, and the Garbhagriha was completed through 2022 — after which the temple was handed over to its devotee committee.
