Alathiyur Subrahmanya Temple was destroyed during the 1921 Moplah riots — the Subrahmanya idol's legs and head were cut off, and the temple land was encroached afterward. It lay in ruins for close to a century before the site was retaken by devotees after litigation.
Worship was restarted at the temple on 29 April 2018, with Swamy Bharati Maharaj lighting the lamp. Devaprashnam rituals followed on 14–15 June 2018, a temporary sanctum was built by 23 August, the old Garbagriha was dismantled on 13 September, the approach road was cleared by 4 November, and Shilanyas for the new Garbagriha was performed on 8 November 2018.
On 13 April 2019, the Sthapathi handed over the key of the completed Garbhagriha to Keshavan Namboodiri, a 95-year-old Namboodiri Brahmin who had protected the temple ruins for decades — he in turn offered the key to the Deity, and then to the newly formed devotee committee. Punar Prathishta rituals began on 6 July 2019, with Kumbabishekam on 11 July 2019.
