Ayyamkulangara Uma Maheshwara temple

Ayyamkulangara Uma Maheshwara temple is situated in Malappuram district of Kerala and is lying in ruins. The temple is located in a village where Lord Shiva is believed to have killed Yama.

The temple was located as part of the #ReclaimTemples project and is being revived. We will be strengthening the local community through various programmes along with the revival of the temple. This will strengthen Dharma in this village in Malappuram.

This is the tenth ancient temple being restored as part of the #ReclaimTemples project.

Temple design

The restoration plan of the temple was prepared by Sri Kanippayyur Kuttan Namboothirippad, who has decades long experience and deep knowledge on temple architecture

UPDATES:

16 September, 2021 Brahmasree Kalppuzha Vasudevan Nambudiri, the Chief Priest of Ayyamkulangara Uma Maheshwara temple performed the initial pujas. He also removed a stone from Garbagriha, marking start of restoration.

24 November 2021: Brahmasree Kalppuzha Vasudevan Nambudiri did the shila puja. Brahmasree Unni Ambotti of the Shankarodathu Kovilakam royal family did the shila sthapanam.

December 2021 : Foundation of the Garbagriha was redone so as to ensure stability and strength

February 2022: The floors of the Garbagriha was also redone. This was a difficult work as the restoration was happening with Shivlinga in situ.

18 March 2022: Affixing the stone frames to the Garbagriha

May 2022: Temple well restoration: The temple well was being used as a garbage dump for decades and was unusable. The sacred well was cleaned as part of restoration.

May-August 2022: The work of the walls of the Garbagriha is also done.

September 2022: Ceiling work: The ceiling work of the Garbagriha is happening.

For the restart of worship is required the temple kitchen where naivedyam will be prepared for the Deity and temple well whose water will be used for abhisheka of Mahadev. The temple kitchen or thidappally is part of nalambalam which is an enclosure around the Garbagriha. The nalambalam houses the other Deities present in the temple like Ganesha. The foundation work of Nalambalam started in the month of Jan.

February 2023

The Garbagriha is almost complete.

March 2023

The construction of temple kitchen or thidappally started.

April 2023

It was found that the water levels has dropped and the water wont be available in the sacred well of temple during peak monsoon. Hence it was decided to deepen and widen the temple well. The work is going on.

We are looking forward to restore the temple at the earliest as soon as the temple kitchen and temple well is ready.

Temple Kitchen

The work of Thidappally or temple kitchen is complete. This is where Nivedyam will be prepared.

Completion of Garbagriha

The work of Garbagriha is complete.

Securing the temple

Since the temple is surrounded by those who doesn’t believe in idol worship and due to instances of trespassing and claims over temple properties, it has become essential to construct boundary wall. The work of boundary wall is progressing.

Namaskara Mandapam

The work of Namaskara Mandapam infront of Garbagriha has started.

12 November 2023 Deeparchana

Savitri Amma, who prayed for more than seventy years for the restoration of this ancient temple lighted lamps during Deepavali , and restarted the tradition of Deeparchana at the temple.

Since the Garbagriha, temple kitchen and temple well is complete, next is the restart of daily worship. This will happen during an auspicious day during next Uttarayana.

18 December, 2023

Boundary wall was built to protect the temple from encroachment, and to set the territory.

28 March, 2024

The work of Namskara Mandapam infront of Gabragriha was started full fledgedly.

The worship was restarted and continues along with other restoration work.

16 April, 2024

The structure of Namaskara Mandapam has started to come up and takes the basic structure.

25 June, 2024

The work of outer enclosures around Garbagriha of the temple begins.

The boundaries will ensure the protection of the temple premises.

1 July, 2024

2nd Phase of restoration of the temple speeds up, this involves Nalambala/ Outer enclosure around Garbagriha, Namaskara Mandapam, temple boundary wall.

Uma Maheshwara Homam is said to bring auspicious benefits to husband and wife. This will be started at the temple once the enclosures of the temples are built.

The restoration of the temple is progressing day by day, it is the result of the constant effort of our team and the valuable donations of our supporters.
Such worsening conditions of the temple requires much more renovation along with new structures built, it is not only the need to revive the temples but also it naturally becomes our responsibility to take care of our old rooted culture.

It is our roots and culture which is our identity, and what defines us. If not we take this initiative then who will.
